22/07/2001 v MONTROSE

lost

The first over of the game set the tone for the afternoon unfortunately- seeing Bob bowl two wides then get his for a 6 and a 4 in succession did nothing to lift Old Dartechs morale. Furhter sloggin from the Montrose batting line up meant that they were cruising along at over 5 an over for most of the inngs. No-one really could stem the flow, although Tony and Martin bowled well at times. At 124 for 5 old Dartechs had a chance to keep the total to manageable proportions, but the young number 7 bat came in and probaly played the best knock of the innings. Some mighty hits disappeared behing the Dunkley erected fencing protecting a dene hole near the tennis coursts. One ball appeared to be heading towards the M2, but miraculously was found by Chris Beard- (how did you do that Chris?) . Good tea – rated by tea afficiondo Deal, as the second best of the year. A total of just over 204 was certainly gettable on the small outfield, howver the grass was quite long, and the aerial route taken by Montrose was probably the most efffective way to a high score. Things did not start well, with Tony scoring a second succesive duck- cant think that has happened oo often before.

Stringer and Lawton got the score moving with a few sharply taken singles, and some crisp boundaries from Lawton. Clive got out playing his favourite run down through the slips, and Chris Beard did not last much longer . Neil called for a quick single but was run out by a sharp direct hit, and OD’s were in deep trouble . Apparently jock never scores runs against Montrose and this was to be no exception as he played all round a full ball on the middle stump.

Lawton and Deal played well and put on 70, and for a moment it looked as if the total was within their grasp. Lawton scored a second fifty in a row, but was stumped on 64 which effectively brough thte run chase to a halt. Richard , bearing the torubles of captaincy heavluiy, played some good shots, and Adm made a well deserverd 35. However the innings ended on 140. Another demoralising defeat, but still no signs of the “Coverly out” badges. Perhaps he just needs better support from his players and a bit of luck.
