17/09/2000 v ERITH

lost

After a long lay off (cock up on fixtures front- and poor weather, Old Dartechs faced an unknown Erith side with a relatively strong team.

Tony and Clive opened, but Old Dartechs were soon in trouble when Tony mis-cued a short ball outside off stump back to the bowler. Jock Steene and Steve Lawton fared no better on a slow pitch, and it was up to Chris Beard, and Clive to mount a recovery. The pair put on 36 runs, before Chris was out to a good catch a mid on.

Clive battled on, but was beaten in the first over by the leg-spinner, the ball turning prodigiously and catching the faintest of edges to the keeper. this precipitated the worst collapse of the season (yes it was that bad, and six wickets fell for the space of a few runs. The veteran leggie returned figures of four wickets for no runs. Erith went out to bat before tea, and quickly notched up 30 runs.

Tea was a prolonged affair, but it had the effect of rallying Old D's, and they fought their way back into the game, due to some controlled bowling by Andrew Cruickshank and the skipper- Richard Coverly.

It was all to no avail however as Erith made their target for the loss of three wickets. They were made to fight a bit though, and the memories of the last game of the season wont all be bad.
