15/06/2014 v SOUTHFLEET

lost

There’s something about Southfleet that makes us want to look like we are going to win only to surprise the skysports spectators by unbelievably losing.

It was a 40 over game. We had three of their players on our side and kindly they didn’t offer us their lesser individuals. It was a tidy bowling and fielding performance. Charlie had a particularly good spell, didn’t take any wickets but didn’t give them many runs, that was until Shaun knocked him for a six and a four in successive balls and pretty much doubled his runs conceded. With wickets regularly going, Pete taking 3 matt got 2 steve got 1, mark got 1 we found ourselves having restricted them to 196 which on that ground was a fair effort.

Following a very nice and varied tea we sent out two of our oppo players to open the batting for us to give Clive a break as he had stepped up the plate to wicket keeper.

A decent start in terms of runs per over but both opening batsmen out for no more than 15. In came Charlie first and then Clive and what a partnership. 120 they scored between them and always ahead of the run rate. Charlie eventually perished for 80 with us needing only 15 from about 30 balls.

Pretty much won it right?

Charlie had the momentum and all of a sudden we started getting jittery when he got out. I had been on the sideline for the last hour or so laughing at how Clive likes to run people out, and true to form the irony fairy waved her magic wand and I was run out for 0, then Steve was run out (potentially for 0 too).

In the last over we needed 4 from six balls and on the last ball we needed 3 to win and 2 to draw. The ball was sent down, Clive hit it for a potential two to draw it but jogged down the pitch for one having thought we only needed 1. Further irony is if he had ran the two he would have also got his 50.

So defeat well and truly snatched from the jaws of victory and we move on as a team that loses whatever the situation it seems. Now everyone put an L to your forehead and move along!
